It’s true… sometimes moms really do know best. South African au pair Kendra is getting ready to follow in her mom’s footsteps… by becoming an Au Pair in America, just like her mom did 24 years ago! We caught up with them both, check out what they had to say…
So Kendra, why did you want to become an Au Pair in America?
I spent one and a half years teaching in South Korea which was an extremely rewarding experience for me. I felt ready for a new adventure and I wanted my next adventure to include childcare. I’m really interested in the American culture and the overall experience of being able to share my culture with my host family, so this was the perfect opportunity for me.
What are you looking forward to the most about living in the USA for one year?
I’m looking forward to experiencing a completely new way of life as well as the countless adventures that await me.
Did your mom influence your decision to sign up to Au Pair in America?
Yes she did, knowing that she was an au pair in America and thoroughly enjoyed her experience, I knew I would likely have the same experience and that this program was the right one for me.
What are the top places you want to visit during your au pair year?
There are SO many but the main ones are, Times Square, Arches National Park, Universal Studios, Washington D.C, Grand Central Station and the Museum of Modern Art.
Over to Kendra’s mom… when and where were you an au pair in the USA?
I was an au pair 24 years ago, firstly in New Jersey and then in Miami.
Did you enjoy your Au Pair in America experience?
Very much so, it was a wonderful experience, one that I’ll never forget. I am still in touch with my host family even now and they have also made trips to visit me in South Africa. My host family have become life-long friends of mine.
Why did you want Kendra to experience life in the USA as an au pair?
I feel like she would gain a lot from the experience. She loves to experience different cultures and learn from people who are from different backgrounds and walks of life so I know this experience will be perfect for her.
What was the one highlight of your au pair experience?
I took so many amazing road trips with my host family to different States but I’d have to say, visiting an Amish town and seeing first-hand how the Amish live was the highlight for me.
What do you think Kendra will gain from this experience?
Being immersed in a completely new and different surrounding and culture that she is not accustomed to will definitely help her to grow as a person and will broaden her horizons. I’m so proud of her and can’t wait to hear how she’s getting on when she departs early next year.
